ÇAY IN HİKAYESİ

ÇAY    DEYİP   GEÇMEYİN   DOSTLAR

Bir bardak çay deyip geçmeyin aslında birçok gerçeği gösterir hayatımızdan bir kesittir.

Çayın alt demliği "
KAYNANADIR"
Sürekli kaynar durur. Hatta dikkat edilmezse taşabilir.

Üst demlik "
GELİNDİR"
Alt demlik kaynadıkça onunda harareti artar. Ama zamanla da olgunlaşır ve demlenir....

"
GELİNİN KOCASI" ise Bardaktır.   Her iki çaydanlıktan da yeterince nasibini alır. Biraz kaynana doldurur onu, biraz da gelin. Bu nedenle de
Denge unsurudur. Açık yada demli çayın hoşa gitmemesi bundandır...

"

Christmas

Today is Christmas which is holy time for Christians and tells the story about how Jesus reborns after being killed by the Roman Empire then. According to Christians` belief, on 21 of December Jesus dies or being killed and on 24 of December he reborns again but i believe that is the truth to be said that this is just an invented version of pagan belief into old, real christian belief  because when we search the history and other old belief systems which are not from God we can easily encounter that almost all pagan belief  systems has the story that their claimed god or gods die and reborn exactly the same date with the date i have mentioned above so we can obviously deduct that old pagan beliefs were settled to christian belief unfortunately. I t used to be a christian celebration but now it is also being widely celebrated by the non christian cultures and countries, i think ,this is because of the effect of trying to be the part of western countries  and culture and be accepted and be involved in. Today what we witness in Muslim countries is imitation especially in Turkey but not exactly the same way as they do, thanks God. As a matter of fact but we do not celebrate Christmas we just celebrate the new year and try to get rod of the stress which stems from its cargo. We have to be so careful that somebody could misunderstand us about what we are doing. The important thing is the spirit itself as Charles Dickens says in his work called Christmas Carol. Although so many Christians do not practice the necessities of the religion they can have the holidays or any other good things which are actually gifts for the believers so i believe that they just benefit from the religion just like us. Here in Turkey there are so many people, millions of people who do not pray five times a day or fast during Ramadan month or we can count so many others. However they can have the holidays or happy times so i think those who do like that are claimed Muslims. Anyway everybody is same whatever their beliefs are or who they are or what they are thought to be, so the result is that WE ARE HYPOCRITE.

Anyway I wish a happy christmas to everybody and happy new year.

A Page Long One Sentence

THE QUOTE

A MAN IN DEBT IS SO FAR A SLAVE.

The news of the week

                                            FABULOUS QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“HE WHO HAS A THOUSAND FRIENDS HAS NOT A FRIEND TO SPARE, WHILE HE WHO HAS ONE ENEMY SHALL MEET HIM EVERYWHERE.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson

Time chooses ‘The Protester’ not Erdogan as ‘Person of the YeaR
"The Protester" has been named American Time magazine's Person of the Year although Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan topped the poll of the People's Choice for Time's 2011 Person of the Year. The magazine revealed its decision on Wednesday, after it announced on Tuesday that Erdoğan was Time readers' choice for the title of Person of the Year. The magazine did not name Erdoğan the Person of the Year but chose “The Protester,” which refers to waves of protests across the world, including those against dictators in the Middle East and the Occupy Wall Street movement that left their mark on 2011.Time defines the Person of the Year as someone who, for better or for worse, influences the events of the year."Is there a global tipping point for frustration? Everywhere, it seems, people said they'd had enough," Time Editor Rick Stengel said in a statement."They dissented; they demanded; they did not despair, even when the answers came back in a cloud of tear gas or a hail of bullets. They literally embodied the idea that individual action can bring collective, colossal change," he said. The magazine also revealed the runners-up for 2011 Person of the Year on its website, TIME.com. Coming in No. 2 on the list is Adm. William H. McRaven, who organized the raid that led to the death of Osama bin Laden in May.Time's choice for last year was Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg although WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange ranked first in Time's poll.Time has chosen its Person of the Year every year since 1927, and sometimes it has involved a group, like the protester, or a concept.According to Time's annual poll for 2011, Erdoğan received 122,928 votes nominating him as the most influential person of the year, with Barcelona soccer player Lionel Messi coming in a far second with only 75,000 votes and the protester coming third. The Turkish prime minister not only topped the People's Choice for Time's 2011 Person of the Year poll but the list of least popular people as well. He came in first among the least popular with 180,564 votes.

Salehi comforts Ankara over NATO shield threats

Iranian FM assures Turkey that the Islamic country does not pose any threat to its neighbor denying aggressive statements made by its officials.

Iran has dismissed comments from its own officials to target a NATO missile shield in eastern Turkey if the Islamic republic is threatenedby the West, Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. “We reject those views completely,” Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said in an interview, adding that those who had made the irresponsible statements had been warned. “The Islamic Republic of Iran’s official stance on Turkey is based on deep brotherhood and friendship,” he said, adding that only Iran’s supreme leader, president and foreign minister were able to pronounce on Iran’s official attitude on international matters and foreign policy. “Other statements are considered personal views,” he said. “Our relations with Turkey are at their best level ever from a political, economic and cultural perspective. More than 2 million Iranians visit Turkey each year, Salehi said. “There may be different views but that is natural. Turkey and Iran favor peace, stability and security in the region,” he said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu thanked Salehi for his statement yesterday. “There was no tension in ties with Iran [over the statements of Iranian officials],” he told reporters. “Turkish-Iranian friendship is forever. No one can deny it.” Meanwhile, Turkey’s uneasiness over Iranian officials’ threats to hit the NATO radar system to be deployed in Turkey was expressed by Davutoğlu in speaking with Salehi on Dec. 13.

Small countries join EU, big countries bargain

Small countries were joining the European Union while big countries were bargaining, Turkey’s president said late Dec. 9 after Turkey’s disappointment in not progressing in its EU bid while Croatia signed its accession treaty. “Small countries are joining the EU, but big countries are bargaining,” Gül said at the fourth World Policy Conference in Vienna, Austria.

Gül’s remarks came after Croatia, whose negotiation process with the union began at the same time as Turkey, signed an accession treaty with the EU. Croatia will become EU’s 28th member in July 2013. Gül said Turkey’s real goal was to conclude the negotiation process successfully, and then it may decide not to join the union, just like Norway. When asked how many EU member countries were also members of the G-20, Gül said “Only three or four of them, and therefore this should be evaluated well.” Turkey is a member of G-20 and became an EU candidate country in December 1999. The union launched accession talks with Turkey on Oct. 3, 2005. The EU has so far opened 13 of the 35 chapter headings to negotiations with Turkey. Meanwhile, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç said Dec. 10 from Indonesia where he was attending the fourth Bali Democracy Forum that they would ask about the EU membership issue to the Turkish people. “Turkey wants to join the EU… We have been given many obstacles… But the EU is not a single choice for Turkey. We will ask about the EU membership issue to our people,” Arınç said during a meeting with Indonesian media representatives. The EU was not sine qua non for Turkey, Arınç said, and Turkey had a model partnership with the U.S. as well as Asia and Africa. Turkey recently opened 30 embassies in Africa, he said.

Attack kills 4 in Belgium

A lunch-hour attack yesterday in a busy central square in the eastern Belgian city of Liege left 75 people injured and four dead, including the gunman, a prosecutor said. The lone gunman opened fire on a square packed with children and Christmas shoppers in Liege, killing three people before turning the gun on himself. More than 70 people were also wounded in the lunch-hour attack, public prosecutor Daniel Reynders said. Reynders said the gunman, Nordine Amrani, 32, was among the four people dead, along with a 15-year-old who died instantly, and a 17-year-old boy and a 75-year-old woman who died later in the hospital. The country’s federal crisis center said it was neither a terrorist incident nor was linked to a pending criminal trial. “It was a lone gunman,” the center’s Benoit Ramacker told Agence France-Presse. “We’re investigating all avenues.” Belgium’s Interior Minister Joelle Milquet broke off EU talks and immediately headed for Liege after the attack, as did newly named Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo. The attack sent terrified residents running for their lives, and hours later groups of people sat weeping on sidewalks across the windy city amid the screech of ambulance sirens and the roar of helicopters hovering overhead. The shooting took place around noon on Saint-Lambert square, home to the courthouse and located near a busy Christmas market in the town of 196,000. Some reports said it was a foiled bid to rescue a suspect from the courthouse, but judicial sources said Amrani acted alone. The sources said police had raided Amrani’s Liege home recently seeking cannabis plants but had found arms instead. In 2008 he was sentenced to almost five years behind bars for illegal possession of arms and growing marijuana. There was much confusion over the early details of the events, with initial reports citing more than one gunman. Journalist Nicolas Gilenne told AFP he had just left the courthouse where he was covering a trial when the attack began. “He wanted to hurt as many people as possible” he said.

Let's Take a Close Look What Happens Around Us

                                       FABULOUS QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“THE ONLY PLACE WHERE YOUR DREAM BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE IS IN YOUR OWN THINKING.”

Topkapı Palace Opens to Visitors After Brutal Attack

Topkapı Palace in Sultanahmet, the historic heart of İstanbul, is open to visitors once again after an assailant opened fire in the palace's complex, wounding two people before eventually being killed by police. The Libyan attacker carrying a pump-action rifle on Wednesday entered the Topkapı Palace complex and opened fire, wounding a soldier and a security guard.

An eyewitness said the assailant walked into the grounds of Topkapı Palace and closed the doors at the entrance to the palace complex after shooting the soldier in the leg and the guard in the abdomen. The attacker exchanged fire with police for more than an hour before being killed.

The palace complex, one of the city's top tourist attractions, was reopened to visitors on Thursday morning. Visitors that entered the palace in the morning were able to see the bullet holes in the walls and other spots of interest in the complex.

Although the assailant's motive is unknown, witnesses said he shouted God is Great and said in Arabic that he was from Syria, raising suspicions that the incident was linked to the political tension between Turkey and Syria over President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown on anti-regime protests.Fearing future attacks, the number of security guards at the palace has been increased.

There are policemen and armed soldiers at the entrance of the palace watching the area. Topkapı Palace, which was constructed between 1460 and 1478 by Sultan Mehmed II, the conqueror of Constantinople which is currently called Istanbul, served as the primary residence of the Ottoman sultans for approximately 400 years (1465-1856).

It is now a major tourist attraction containing important holy relics of the Muslim world, including the Prophet Muhammad's cloak and sword. The Topkapı Palace became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

Coefficients in Turkish University Exam Lifted

Turkey’s Higher Education Board (YÖK) has ended the controversial application of different coefficients for students at university entrance exams in a move that puts graduates of vocational high schools on equalpar with others.

The YÖK has fixed an equal coefficient of 0.12 for the grade point average of all students, regardless of what faculty they apply for, effectively neutralizing its impact.

The coefficient rule, designed to confine graduates of vocational schools to divinity faculties and junior technical college, was introduced in the late 1990s after an army-led campaign forced Turkey’s Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan to resign.

Under the former practice, YÖK awarded vocational schools graduates lesser coefficients for their scores when they chose to apply to departments other than divinity and junior technical college, practically blocking their way to faculties that could propel them to prominent public posts.

The practice was valid for graduates of all vocational schools who sought to enter universities outside their field. Before yesterday’s decision, YÖK had already minimized the impact of the coefficients, keeping the punitive one at 0.12, only slightly lower than the normal coefficient of 0.15. YÖK officials reportedly rushed the decision in order to have it included in the 2012 handbook for next year’s university exam, which has to be finalized by Dec. 15.

At the same meeting, the board approved the Rize University’s decision to change its name to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University in honor of Turkey’s prime minister, who hails from the region.

EU Foreign Ministers Say Turkey's EU Accession Process Important

Eleven foreign ministers have said Turkey's European Union accession process is of vital strategic and economic importance for both the bloc and Turkey, welcoming Turkey's rise in global politics and economy. The foreign ministers said Turkey's accession process is of vital strategic and economic importance for both the EU and Turkey and that the 27-member bloc welcomes Turkey's commitment to continuing reforms to meet its European goal and offer it the EU's full support. “Together, the EU and Turkey can steer a safer path through the current global economic and political storms,” they said.

The foreign ministers said the EU is currently focused on the turmoil in the eurozone and that poses severe risks to economic growth in EU member states, noting that these tumultuous economic and political times should not lead to the EU turning its back on its neighborhood.

The foreign ministers stressed that Turkey is an important partner as a new economic powerhouse for the Single Market and a growing regional power that could contribute to EU's shared foreign policy effort.

“We believe strongly in the benefits the Turkish accession process has brought both to the EU and Turkey and in its continued importance for driving progress towards shared goals such as economic competitiveness, energy security and regional stability,” they wrote.

Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk in 60 Languages

Turkish Nobel literature laureate Orhan Pamuk’s 1990 novel “Kara Kitap” (The Black Book) is being translated into Mongolian, the author’s Turkish publisher, İletişim Publications, announced this week.

The translation of “The Black Book” into Mongolian marks the 60th language in which Pamuk’s works are available, including such major languages as English, Spanish, French and German, İletişim said in a written statement on Friday.

The first-ever translation into a foreign language of a work by Pamuk was in 1991, when his novel “Sessiz Ev” (The House of Silence) was published in France to great acclaim, winning the country’s Prix de la découverte Européene (European discovery prize) the same year. The Mongolian translation of “The Black Book” will be published by the Nepko Publishing House, İletişim said. “The Black Book” follows the story of Galip, an İstanbul-based lawyer who goes searching for his vanished wife like a private investigator. The 59-year-old Pamuk has published eight novels throughout his 30-year career as a writer. His works have collectively sold around 11 million copies around the world, İletişim said.

DAVET

DAVET ...

"şunları bir araya toplayayım.
Bir güzel muhabbet edelim" diye düşündüm.
Mutfak işinden de anlarım.
Donattım sofrayı.
Bayağı uğraştım.
Hepsinin, ayrı ayrı ne
yemekten, ne içmekten
hoşlandığını iyi bilirim.
Bayağı da para gitti.
Birinin yediğini öbürü yemez.
Ötekinin içtiğini beriki içmez.
Dört kişilik sofra kurdum.
Mumları da yaktım.
Bak hepsi, Erick Satie severdi.
Hatırladım.
Müziği de ayarladım.

Geldiler.
20 yaşında ben,
35 yaşımda ben,
40 yaşımda ben ve
bugünkü ben dördümüz.
Birden yirmi yaşımı, otuz beş yaşımın karşısına oturttum.
Kırk yaşımın karşısına da, ben geçtim.
Yirmi yaşım, otuz beş yaşımı tutucu buldu.
Kırk yaşım ikisinin de salak olduğunu söyledi.
Yatıştırayım dedim.
"Sen karışma moruk" dediler. Büyük hır çıktı.
Komşular alttan üstten duvarlara vurdular.
Yirmi yaşım kırk yaşıma bardak attı.
Evin de içine ettiler.

Bende kabahat.

My army days

Now that ı write something about my friends from army, I would like to write more - I want to tell more about them especially short term ones as far as I remember. First one is Uğur who is textile engineer and from Mersin, he is very handsome and I think attractive. At least I can say that he is the most handsome among us, I say that because whenever we went out, almost all girls gazed at him anyway that is truth whether we like or not. He has lots of dreams about business. He would like to launch first a workshop and then a factory, I hope he can. Now he is in Mersin and works for a company which works on import and export and that's all I know for the time being.
Second one is İbrahim, our eldest member, he is 32 years old and he has just completed hıs obligatory service 12 years later than it is supposed to be but I have to mention that he was the most athletic energetic soldier in the unit. Although he is from Erzurum which is accepted as the city where rude people live -of course ı do not agree with that- he is very romantic, we used to speak about our old loves and adventures when we were at gates as guards at night, now he is in Bodrum and he work on Tourism. He wants to develop his English because he really needs it. I think he is such kind of immigrant as he spends his 6 months in Bodrum other 6 months in İstanbul. That's all I can say about İbrahim.
Well, the third one is Muhammed İkbal who works at Üsküdar municipality in İstanbul. İkbal is a one track mind person; it is hard to change his mind and he is a religious man so he prays 5 times a day. İkbal is originally from Kırşehir but Konya is his second house. We had some quarrels with İkbal but we made up them and now we are fine but ı have a story that made him crazy; once were doing our services as night watchers and we had to wait for 2 hours after midnight  but that night clocks were supposed to take forward so the country could benefit from sunlight more anyway ı was the night watcher between 9-12 pm and offered something to he commander and persuaded him to change the schedule so ı just waited 2 hours instead of 3. İkbal and other nightwatchers were expecting to have just 1 hour thanks to the new time table but because of my new plan thy waited 2 hours and it was one of the bigest surprises for them. Well,  I think those days were funny beside being torture.
The fourth one is Ömer. He is the guy who is from Bitlis and advocatesor supports bdp which is a political party that has some links with terrorists group pkk. I actually think he is ok a good guy but like İkbal he has rigid pricise ideas about what he believes. He is a map engineer and works in Bitlis with his uncle. He graduated from an Azerbaycan University. He is single but can be accepted engaged as she was talking to a girl who was calling from Azerbaycan.
The fifth one is Alper who is originally from Erzurum but does not want to live there. He was working as banker at Halkbank but then he has been appointed as agriculture engineer to Kütahya. I do not know how he is now or what he does because we havent talked for 3 months I think. He is flat child he spent his childhood among concrete buildings and did everything with the help of his family especially his mother that's why he did not want to study university outside of Ankara.
And the last one is me

Gemiler Giresun'a

Gemiler Giresun'a is a great song which I first listened when I was a soldier in Balıkesir. As we were at dorm and were about to sleep, İkbal entered the dorm and offered us to sing a song then he started to sing the song I have mentioned above. I felt different odd feelings as soon as ı heard it because It reminded me everybody I love and also that kind of songs are the songs ı like listening.OK I give a link for you in case you want to listen below.

Tek düğmesi olacak elindeki cihazın;
tek bir düğme, tek bir cümle gibi;
sevince lafı dolandırmadan söylediğin
“seni seviyorum” gibi.
Kabak çekirdeği verecek sana
rakamların veremediği mutluluğu.
El yazısıyla yazılmış eğri büğrü bir mektup olacak
en değerli kağıdın; hep yanında taşıdığın,
atmaya kıyamadığın.
…Bir kaşarlı tost olacak aradığın
nasıl oturacağını bilemediğin sofrada;
parmakların olacak en kıymetli çatalın.
…“Bilmiyorum” diyebileceksin bilmediğinde
ve çok normal olacak onu da bilmeyişin.
Tek dereden su getirmen yetecek,
bir “istemiyorum” diyebilmeye.
Saatin, sadece saati gösterecek;
Telefonunu sadece telefon etmek için kullanacaksın.
Küçük bir not defteri olacak bilgini en hızlı sayan.
Basit yaşayacaksın, basit.
Sanki yaşamın bir gün sona erecekmiş gibi
basit…

Life, Hayat

“Yaşamak şakaya gelmez.
Büyük bir ciddiyetle yaşayacaksın,
Bir sincap gibi mesela
Yani yaşamın dışında ve ötesinde hiçbir şey beklemeden
Yani bütün işin gücün yaşamak olacak…”

N.Hikmet

The Other me

I have seen another sky
I have climbed another tree
I have wished another star,
above another star lit sea

Another me lives another life,
I've always dreamed
Another me exists somewhere
Why can't I live that life there?
Please let me be ... the other me

And I have seen another sunrise,
and another lightning storm
I'm not just the me you see
You see another me was born

Another me lives another life,
I've always dreamed
Another me exists somewhere
Why can't I live that life there?
Please let me be ... the other me

Somewhere I'm happy
I'm smiled at understood
In another Place I lift my face,
not hide it in a hood

I have seen another sky
I have climbed another tree
I have wished another star,
above another star lit sea

Somewhere I'm happy
I'm smiled at understood
In another Place I lift my face,
not hide it in a hood

I have loved another love,
in another place like this
I've been held and felt so safe
Oh yes, I've kissed another kiss..

I Married Yasemin on 11\09\2011 at 6:30 in Uskudar

At last I Married Yasemin on 11\09\2011 at 6:30 in Uskudar. we had been dating for 6 and half years by the time we married. She is from Trabzon which is placed in east part of Turkey and i live in Istanbul which is in west so it was a little bit difficult for us to have ceremonies and it was also a bit expensive. Anyway we are together and the rest is not important. However i have understood that marriage life is pretty different than the dating, i thought nothing was going to change and we were going our path as we always did but it did not happened like that; firstly you have to deal with everything on your own-the bills, shopping, neighbours, and the problems. My wife Yasemin cannot cook, it is not because of her laziness or incapability but because of lacking of time as we leave the house at 6 in the morning and she comes home at 7 I arrive at about 10 pm because i have two jobs. i am supposed to work much because i have so many debts and i have to pay them as soon as possible. Nowadays i am in dilemma that my first job ( ACA) has offered me better conditions than here except working in the evenings and weekends but i have signed a deal with Doga high school, the conditions here are very difficult than the former because i have to apply so many things that i cannot write here. i should prepare students both for international English language testing system( IELTS), Cambridge ESOL, KET, PET and also university entrance exam. If i quit my job here i could be punished 5000 tl because i give up before the time is over. i have to decide what i should do by the end of this month. i hope i can do the best for my family. WISH ME LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am about to marry

YES IT IS VERY SOON I AM GOING TO MARRY THIS WEEK. MY FIRST CEREMONY WILL BE IN TRABZON ON 08/09/2011 AT 8 O CLOCK AT ORJIN WEDDING HALL AND MY SECOND WEDDING CEREMONY WILL BE IN ISTANBUL ON 11/09/2011 AT ÜSKÜDAR MUNICIPALITY WEDDING HALL. IT HAS BEEN A TOTAL 7 YES SEVEN YEARS SINCE WE MET SINCE I LOVED YASEMIN SO AT LAST WE CAN MARRY WE CAN DESTROY ALL HANDICAPS WE CAN IGNORE EVERYBODY AND WE MARRY. I AM SO HAPPY ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SOME BOTHERING THINGS SUCH AS THE MONEY I SPENT AND RELATIVES. I DO NOT WANT TO MAKE MY MOTHER AND MY WIFE SAD, I TRY TO FIND MIDDLE WAY BUT ITI IS VERY HARD TO FOLLOW. MY MOTHER IS A VILLAGER AND SHE ACTS ACCORDING TO IT. SHE EXPECTS HER DAUGHTER IN LAWS TO BEHAVE AS SHE BEHAVED WHEN MY MOTHER WAS A BRIDE HOWEVER SHE IS NOT AWARE THAT TIME HAS CHANGED AND THIS IS NOT VILLAGE AND THE BRIDES ARE NOT FROM OUR VILLAGE OR THEY ARE NOT OUR RELATIVES SO IT IS NATURAL FOR THEM TO BEHAVE IN AN UNUSUAL, OPPOSITE WAY. THATS WHY THE PROBLEM OCCURS. ANYWAY I HOPE WE CAN HANDLE THE SITUATION. TAKE CARE MY DEAR BLOG. I MISS WRITING HERE.

NBA

NBA yöneticileri Siegel+Gale’in kurucusu Alan Siegel’e giderek yardım istediler.

Love is a coincidence (Aşk tesadüfleri sever)

Hamile karısı Neriman'ı hastaneye yetiştirmeye çalışan Yılmaz Bey' in kullandığ araba, Ömer Bey' in arabasına arkadan çarpar. Bu çarpışma Ömer Bey' in arka koltukta oturan hamile karısı İnci' nin erken doğum yapmasına neden olur. Her kesişme onların hayatında büyük değişikliklere sebep olur.

Yasemin

I HAVE UNDERSTOOD SOMETHINHG THAT I AM BOUND TO YOU. WHERE YOU ARE IS WHERE I BREATH, WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT OR NOT AROUND ME, THEN MY NIGHTMARE BEGINS AND I START TO MELT DOWN. NOW YOU ARE FAR AWAY AND I CAN DO NOTHING ACTUALLY I DO NOT WANNA DO ANYTHING. WHEN YOU ARE GONE, LIFE IS MEANINGLESS, THERE IS NO SENSE TO GO OUT, SEE THE THINGS AND TO LIVE. I LOVE SO MUCHHH SO MUCH YASEMIN.
I HOPE THIS TORTURE WILL SOON BE FINISHED ALTHOUGH YOUR FOOL UNCLES' BEHAVIOUR. YOU ARE GONNA BE MINE. AND WHEN THIS COME TRUE, I AM NOT GONNA SHARE YOU EVEN WITH YOUR FAMILY.
PLEASE COME BACK BEFORE EXPECTED AND MAKE ME SURPISE. YOU ARE MY DEAR AND EVERYTHING

A Lovely day was Gone

I KNOW IT HAS BEEN A LITTLE LONG SINCE I WROTE HERE AFTER I CAME BACK FROM MILITARY. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO STUDY FOR KPSS( AN EXAM FOR BEING APPOINTED AS A PERMANENT TEACHER AT GOVERMENT SCHOOLS)FOR 1 MONTH AND I HAVE 1 MORE. THESE DAYS YASEMIN IS UNWELL SHE IS INDEED UNDER STRESS BECAUSE OF EVERYTHING AROUND US FOR EXAMPLE MARRIAGE PREP. HOME BRIDE DRESS FURNITURE JOB LOCATION AND HER FLATMATE SO WE DECIDED TO MAKE SOME CHANGES IN OUR LIFE AND CALLED NIHAN WHO IS MY DEAR'S OLD FLATMATE AT COLLEGE WHETHER SHE IS SUITABLE AND COME OUT WITH US THEN SHE SAID YES SO WE WENT OUT. WE GOT BEYOGLU AT ABOUT 10 PM AND STARTED TO WANDER AROUND ISTIKLAL STREET WHICH I THINK THE MOST FAMOUS ONE IN TURKEY AND ISTANBUL. WE ATE MARAŞ ICE CREAM THAT DOESNT MELT SO EASILY THEN WE WENT TO A MALL WHOSE NAME IS UNCLEAR TO MY MIND NOW. IT IS BRILLIANT PLACE AS ITS ARCHITECTURE IS VERY NICE. FROM OUT IT IS A 18TH CENTURY FROM INSIDE IT IS TOTALY 21TH CENTURY. I WANTED TO BUY HIGH HEEL SCHOOLS FOR MY FUTURE WIFE YASEMIN AND ALTHOUGH WE CHOOSED ONE WE COULDNT FIND THE TRUE SIZE UNFORTUNATELY IT WAS LIKE THAT BUT NOT EXACTLY LIKE THIS THE COLOR WAS DIFFERENT

ANYWAY WE WENT ON OUR NIGHT OUTSIDE AFTER UNSUCCESSFUL SHOPPING. WHILE WE WERE WALKING ON THE STREET I SAW THE MEMORY MACHINE AND TOOK A PHOTO OF US, IT WAS VERY NICE. I KNITTED MY EYEBROW, YASEMIN WAS TALKING ON THE PHONE AND EATING ICE CREAM AND NIHAN WAS LIKE SHE WAS NOT AWARE OF NOTHING THERE. :))) BY THE WAY YASEMIN WAS TALKING HER MASTER TEACHER AND SHE LIED NOT TO GO TO WORK THE FOLLOWING DAY.I MUST KEEP THIS SECRET.WHATEVER
HERE IS THE PICTURE

THEN WE WENT TO A CAFE/PUB THERE WAS LIVE MUSIC AND THE BAND INDEED PERFECT ESPECIALLY THE GUITAR MAN. WE HANGN THERE TILL 2 AM AND GO OUT STARTED WALKING ALONG ISTIKLAL STREET THEN HALASKARGAZI ŞİŞLİ MİLİTARY MUSEUM NİŞANTAŞI AT THE END WE GOT ON A TAXI BUT TO OUR CHANCE THE DRIVER LOST HIS WAY ON THE WAY OF HOME. WHEN WE ARRIVED HOME I AND ESPECIALLY YASEMIN WERE VERY HAPPY. I KISSED HER AND FELL ASLEEP.

Shibumi

I AM READING A BOOK THESE DAYS WHICH IS ALMOST THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ ALTHOUGH IT IS FICTION BOOK. ITS NAME IS SHIBUMI BY TRAVANIAN

shibumi

Shibumi is one of my favorite books - it was written by Trevanian, a brilliant author of among other things, spy stories. "Shibumi" is described on P74 of the book:

"Shibumi is understanding, rather than knowledge. Eloquent silence. In demeanor, it is modesty without prudency. In art, where the spirit of shibumi takes the form of sabi, it is elegant simplicity, it is articulate brevity. In philosophy, where shibumi emerges as wabi, it is spiritual tranquility that is not passive; it is being without the angst of becoming. And in the personality of a man, it is... how does one say it? Authority without domination."

I was in my teens when I first read this book, and like the protagonist, was immediately captivated:

"How does one achieve this shibumi, sir?"
"One does not achieve it, one ...discovers it. And only a few men of infinite refinement ever do that. Men like my friend Otake-san."
"Meaning that one must learn a great deal to arrive at shibumi?"
"Meaning, rather, that one must pass through knowledge to arrive at simplicity."

I've never been able to let go of this idea, or more appropriately, this ideal. I'm rereading the book for the nth time on a flight to Washington DC, where I will have the honor of meeting some amazing people in the world of education. As I contemplated that, I recalled a post by Scott McLeod entitled Never going to happen?:

True statement by a teacher (said with all sincerity) in one of my workshops this semester:

We’re so far behind our students. How do we catch up and move past them so that we can then teach them things they don’t know?

I don't know this for a fact, but think many teachers feel this way - implicitly behind the curve because their students have the ADD to grab at seemingly infinite sources, and empty enough minds to hold on to much of what they've found.

Great teachers, dare I say senseis, have attained shibumi. Their wisdom is not founded on the ability to store ...data. It is founded on a depth of essential understanding and a capacity for humbleness (read: open-minded acceptance) that allows them to grasp, interpret and illuminate.

I couldn't disagree more with the sentiment of Scott's post. Any teacher that views their sole ...asset as data is hopeless. Worse, they're harming their students by valuing rote over understanding, regurgitation over insight. These teachers (hopefully just victims of NCLB-mentality) must be redirected or re-schooled to properly serve their students.

The Scott McLeods (respected and visible educators) of the world need to aggressively advocate teaching proficiency - there are no other voices for this.

Teachers should not be paid based on student outcomes, instead they should be paid based on their own attainment of core and advanced teaching skills. I wrote about meeting Deborah Ball a while back, she taught me that like any profession, there are objective, clear, and assessable gradations of attainment in teaching proficiency.

While I don't expect every teacher to attain shibumi, I sure as hell expect each to understand the difference between information and learning, the difference between a capacity to spout data and the ability to find, discern, interpret, create, and communicate insight (or as my friend Larry would put it: observation, reflection, documentation, exhibition).

Yavaş yavaş ölürler,
Seyahat etmeyenler.
Yavaş yavaş ölürler,
Okumayanlar, müzik dinlemeyenler,
Vicdanlarında hoşgörüyü barındıramayanlar.

Yavaş yavaş ölürler!

Alışkanlıklarına esir olanlar,
Her gün aynı yolları yürüyenler,
Ufuklarını genişletmeyen ve değiştirmeyenler,
Elbiselerinin rengini değiştirme riskine bile girmeyenler,
Bir yabancı ile konuşmayanlar.

Yavaş yavaş ölürler!

Heyecanlardan kaçınanlar,
Tamir edilen kırık kalplerin gözlerindeki pırıltıyı görmek istemekten kaçınanlar.

Yavaş yavaş ölürler!

Aşkta veya işte bedbaht olup
yön değiştirmeyenler,
Rüyalarını gerçekleştirmek için
risk almayanlar,
Hayatlarında bir kez dahi mantıklı tavsiyelerin dışına çıkmamış olanlar.

Yavaş yavaş ölürler!
